Staff Sgt. Jorge M. Oliveira, 33, of Newark, N.J., died Oct. 19 in Paktika province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 113th Infantry Regiment, 50th Brigade Combat Team, Riverdale, N.J. Jorge graduated in 1996 from Newark’s East Side High School. He joined the National Guard in 2003 and had previously served three years on Army active duty starting in 1997. He also served at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, from 2004 to 2005, and in Iraq from 2008 to 2009. As a civilian aside of the military, he worked as an Essex County sherriff’s officer. Among his awards are, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Iraq Campaign Medal with Campaign Star. He had also earned the Expert Infantryman Badge and the Air Assault Badge. He leaves his parents, Mrs. Armanda Nunes Oliveira and Manuel Moreira DeOliveira, a brother, Marco and a sister, Jessica.
