Andre Darnell Mitchell, 25, of Elmont, New York. Andre was born in Texas to Henry Anthony and Yasmin Marcella (Patterson) Mitchell. Andre spent his early years in California, and moved to New York in 1989 with his mother, after his parents divorced. He graduated from Sewanhaka High School in 2003 and Nassau Community College in 2005. At Nassau, he was a celebrated member of the African American Student Association. The club chose him to represent the school at several conferences and events throughout the United States, most notably in Atlanta, Georgia. Throughout his pursuit of his education, he worked at Antun’s Catering in Queens Village on the weekends and later at the Marriott Hotel in Uniondale. He was a hard worker and was known to always be there on time, ready to do the job. Andre was very passionate about the United States of America and it was his dream to serve his country. On Valentine’s Day 2006, he enlisted in the United States Army. He was trained at Fort Hood, Texas, for 14 months and was deployed to Iraq in November 2007, assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Hood, Texas. He was killed when the Humvee he was riding in overturned on a sharp curve in Mosul, Iraq. He was buried at Calverton National Cemetery in NY.
