Sgt. Andrew R. Tobin of Jacksonville, Ill., died at age 24 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit using small arms fire. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y. He joined the Army in January 2008, and after completing training came to Fort Drum in June 2008. Sgt Tobin had previously deployed to Afghanistan from January to December 2009. He deployed with his unit again in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in March 2011. His awards and decorations include the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War of Terrorism Service Medal, the Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, two Certificates of Achievement, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Air Assault Badge, the Marksmanship Qualification Badge - Sharpshooter with Machinegun and the Marksmanship Qualification Badge - Sharpshooter with Pistol. He leaves his wife, Katie, his father, Nicholas D Tobin Sr., his mother, Lee Ann Smith and a brother, Nicholas D. Tobin Jr and family.
