Sgt. 1st Class Matthew I. Leggett, 39, of Ruskin, Florida, formerly of Wisconsin, died Aug. 20, in Kabul, Afghanistan, of injuries received when he was engaged by the enemy. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, XVIII Airborne Corps, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Leggett enlisted in the Army in May 1995 and had been based at Fort Bragg since 2012. He served three combat tours and was the recipient of numerous awards and decorations, including a Bronze Star Medal with one oak leaf cluster and a Purple Heart for wounds sustained in combat. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Purple Heart, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with four oak leaf clusters, Army Achievement Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Army Good Conduct Medal sixth award, the National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with one Campaign Star, Iraqi Campaign Medal with three Campaign Stars, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Non-commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon third award, the Meritorious Unit Citation and the NATO ISAF Medal.
