Lance Cpl. Dimitrios Gavriel of New York City grew up in Haverhill, Mass, and attended Timberlane Regional High School in Plaistow, New Hampshire where he was the New Hampshire state wrestling champion. In 1997, he graduated from Brown University. “Dimmy” was a successful real estate securities analyst working on Wall Street when two of his friends died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Resolving to fight terrorism, he joined the Marines last year after first being rejected because of high school wrestling injuries in both knees. He is survived by his parents, Chris and Penelope (Apostolidou); and his sister, Christina of New York. He was killed at age 29 by enemy action in Anbar province, Iraq.
