Gunnery Sgt. George L. Figone Jr of Hampstead, North Carolina, formerly of Stockton, California graduated in 1997 from Linden High School. Following graduation George entered the United States Marine Corps and became an infantry rifleman after boot camp. In June of 1998, he passed the reconnaissance indoctrination course and the basic reconnaissance course. He was deployed to Iraq twice and to Afghanistan. While on deployment with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit in 2003, he was meritoriously promoted to Sergeant. In 2011, George was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant. His personal awards include a Purple Heart, Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal with combat V Device, the Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medal, two Combat Action Ribbons, and four Good Conduct Medals. He served as a rifleman with the 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion. He passed away suddenly at the Hanover Medical Center in North Carolina. He leaves behind his four brothers, Christopher Piro, Eric, Josh and Justin Figone; his three sisters, Mariah and Sierra Looney, and Brittany Figone; his loving Grandmother Margaret C. Rore; his loving aunts and uncles Mike and Debbra Figone, Ray Figone, John Titta, Yolanda and Troy Combs, Jim and Laura Rore, and Anne and Philip Martin; his nephew Caleb Figone. He is preceded in death by his grandfathers Raymond Figone Sr. and Dr. Walter J. Rore, and by his grandmother Doris Figone.

Chief Warrant Officer Shan J. Satterfield, 36, a native of Alaska, served on active duty since September 1997 and has been at Joint Base Lewis-McChord base since December 2009. He had assignments in Korea and at Fort Campbell, Ky., and deployed once to Iraq and once to Afghanistan. CWO Satterfield loved to fly and was following in the military footsteps of his father, who is also a pilot. His parents both retired from the Air Force and also served in the Air Guard. Shan attended school in South Anchorage, graduating in 1997 from Dimond High, where he was on the riflery team and part of the Junior ROTC. He was among four aviator who were on a routine night training flight in reconnaissance choppers when they crashed in the southwest training area of Joint Base Lewis-McChord. His awards include, the Air Medal (two awards), Army Commendation Medal (two awards) and the Aviator Badge.

Capt. Anne M. Montgomery, 25, a native of North Dakota, had served on active duty since August 2008, arriving at Joint Base Lewis-McChord base a year prior. She was a 2008 graduate of the United States Military Academy and had not been deployed overseas. After years of home schooling and time in private schools overseas while her father worked for U.S. Agency for International Development, Montgomery received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. She married another Army helicopter pilot, Chief Warrant Officer Aaron H. Montgomery, in May 2010. She was among four aviator who were on a routine night training flight in reconnaissance choppers when they crashed in the southwest training area of Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Her awards include the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Army Aviator Badge. She leaves her husband, Monty, her parents, Kurt and Kathleen Rockeman, brothers, Gus and Christian and a sister, Geneva Rockeman.

Chief Warrant Officer Frank A. Buoniconti, 36, of Colorado Springs, Colo., had served on active duty since July 1994, arriving at Joint Base Lewis-McChord base in early November. He previously served at Fort Bragg, N.C., and the National Training Center, in Fort Irwin, Calif. He was deployed twice to Iraq and twice to Afghanistan and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He followed his father into the military, joining up because “he felt it was the right thing to do”. He was among four aviator who were on a routine night training flight in reconnaissance choppers when they crashed in the southwest training area of Joint Base Lewis-McChord. His awards include, the Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (six awards), Army Commendation Medal (nine awards), and the Army Commendation Medal w/”V” device and the Army Senior Aviator Badge.

Chief Warrant Officer Lucas Daniel Sigfrid, 32, graduated from Champlin Park High School where he wrestled all four years of school. Though he wasn’t a stand out player, he was dedicated to the sport and to the team. While other wrestlers might quit after two years if they’re not successful he stuck with the program. He attended St. Cloud State University for pilot training before joining the Army. He was among four aviator who were on a routine night training flight in reconnaissance choppers when they crashed in the southwest training area of Joint Base Lewis-McChord. His awards include, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Army Aviator Badge.

Pfc Michael D. Webb, 22, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, December 1, 2011. Michael was the son of Michael Dean Webb, Sr., of Bennettsville, SC, and Tina Linne Prescott of Supply, NC. He is also survived by his grandmother; Margie Prescott, one sister; Elizabeth Withrow and husband Travis, and nephew; Devyn Prescott and niece; Ryle Withrow, all of Supply, NC. Michael was a proud soldier in the United States Army. He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered.

Maj. Jeffrey C. Bland of Champaign, Illinois graduated in 1992 from Galesburg High School and attended the University of Illinois before becoming a Marine on June 10, 1997. During his military career his awards include, two Navy Marine Corps Commendation medals, the Selected Marine Corps Reserve Medal, Air Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, Iraq Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, three Sea Service Deployment Ribbons, and the Korean Defense Service Medal. He leaves his wife, Heather, a daughter, Aliana, his parents, Carl and Janet Bland, his three sisters, Cynthia Marquith, Christine Ross and Julie Griffin.

He was assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Training Squadron 303, Marine Aircraft Group 39, of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing at Air Station Miramar. His awards and decorations include, the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. He leaves his parents, Tom and Mary Therese Leonard Heitmann, a brother, Aaron Heitmann, four sisters, Rachel Christensen, Hannah Pozzi, Sarah Henkel, and Mary Elizabeth Heitmann.

SSG Stephen M Evans formerly of West End, N.C., graduated from Pinecrest High School in 2003. He joined the United States Army in 2005 and served as a combat medic and was a combat veteran serving two tours in Iraq. He ended his career at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, HI as a shift leader in the Emergency Department. Stephen made a friend for life with everyone he came in contact with and leaves behind many friends and soldiers who remember him for his charismatic energy, infectious smile and happy-go-lucky attitude. He was preceded into death by his beloved grandfather, James L. “Pepa” Williams, Jr., and aunt, Kelly Carroll. Stephen leaves his parents, Raymond and Sherri Evans, two brothers, Justin and Brandon Evans, and his soul mate, Melissa Bennett. He died at age 26 at his home in Honolulu.

Sgt. Chester G. Stoda, 32, of Black River Falls, Wis., died Sep. 2, from a non-combat related incident. He was assigned to the 8th Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas. Sgt. Stoda joined the Army in February 2008 and deployed to Afghanistan in December 2010. Chet was assigned to the 8th Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade. His awards and decorations include, the NATO Medal, two Army Achievement Medals, the Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with campaign star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, two Overseas Service Ribbons, and a Combat Action Badge. He died while scuba diving in Hawaii while on leave from Afghanistan.
