2nd Lt. Clovis T. Ray, 34, of San Antonio, Texas died Mar. 15 at Kunar province, Afghanistan of injuries suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. Clovis played football in high school and graduated with honors before attending Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., earning a degree in sociology. 2nd Lt Ray had received a number of awards and decorations since joining the Army in 2010, including the Bronze Star Medal (posthumous), Purple Heart (posthumous), two Army Commendation Medals, National Defense Service Medal and Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Star. He also received a Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal (posthumous), Combat Infantry Badge and Parachutist Badge.

Spc. Lauro G. DeLeon Jr of Floresville, Texas was assigned to the 644th Transportation Company, Army Reserve, Beaumont, Texas; killed at age 20 when improvised explosive devices detonated near his convoy in Balad, Iraq. DeLeon, a 2003 graduate of Floresville High School, enlisted shortly after completing his education. He leaves his mother and stepfather, Grace Lopez and Jimmy, his father and stepmother, Lauro S. De Leon, Jr. and Virginia, brothers and sisters, Ruben and Jo Ann Garcia, Jimmy Lopez, Jr., Nina Ruiz, Lillie Villanueva, Linda Lopez, Carrie De Leon and Christopher De Leon.

Spc. Payton A. Jones of Marble Falls, Texas died at age 19 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered from small arms fire during an attack on their base. They were assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C. Pfc Jones joined the Army in July 2010, completing One Station Unit Training and the Basic Airborne Course at Fort Benning, Ga., before being assigned to Fort Bragg in 2010. This was his first deployment. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge and the Parachutist Badge.

Capt. Nathan W. Anderson, 32, of Amarillo, Texas, commissioned in the Marine Corps December 20, 2024 and served as a UH-1Y Huey pilot. Nathan graduated in 1998 from Amarillo High School where he was a starting linebacker on the 1997 team that made it to the state quarterfinals. As a Marine, he had deployed to Iraq three times, in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Capt Anderson joined the Marine Corps in 2002. He was one of seven Marines killed in a helicopter crash near Yuma, Ariz. Capt. Anderson served as a UH-1Y Huey pilot. Among his Awards are, the Air Medal Individual Action, Air Medal Strike/Flight (numeral 2), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Pfc Joe Christopher Robinson, 21, of Mineral Wells, Texas entered active-duty service in July 2008 as an infantryman. He was assigned to 1st Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood since January 2009. Robinson deployed to Iraq from January to December 2009. His awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal with campaign star, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon and Driver and Mechanic Badge. Robinson was transported by Fort Hood Emergency Medical Services to Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center and later to Scott and White Hospital in Temple, Texas, where he died on Feb. 9.

Cpl. Joseph D. Logan, 22, of Willis, Texas died January 19 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 363, Marine Aircraft Group 24, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. He was an aerial observer who joined HMH-363 in May 2011. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in November 2008. This was his second deployment to Afghanistan. His awards include, an Air Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and NATO ISAF Medal. He was part of the Lucky Red Lions helicopter squadron HMH-363. The unit deployed in August 2011 to southern Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, and is set to return home in March 2012. Their mission is to provide assault support, transport Marines and critical supplies, as well as equipment during expeditionary operations.
Visitation with the family is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Willis. The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the North Montgomery County Community Center, 600 Gerald St. in Willis.

He is a 2006 graduate of McAllen Memorial High School where he worked hard in class and played hard on the football field. He joined the military in September 2009 as military police and was assigned to the 720th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade, Fort Hood, since September 2011. Spc Kern deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in December 2011. His awards and decorations include, the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon and Overseas Service Ribbon.

1st Lt. Dustin D. Vincent of Mesquite, Texas died at age 25 in Kirkuk province, Iraq, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Field Artillery, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kan. He joined the Army in June 2009 as an artillery officer. This was his first deployment. Cabrera, 41, of Abilene, Texas died Oct. 29, in Kabul province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device. He was assigned to Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences, Bethesda, Md. He graduated in 1988 from Sam Houston High School and attended Texas A&M University. He joined the Army in 1996.
A Memorial Service was held at Grace Community Church on November 4, 2011, in Fulton, Maryland, and another will be held in early December in Bethesda, Maryland, at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.
