Spc Robert P. Hartwick of Rockbridge, Ohio graduated from Logan High School in 2009. He joined the Army in June 2009 and was serving as a combat medic. He died at age 20 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with indirect fire. He leaves his parents, Robert A. and Linda K. Hartwick, and two sisters, Haley Russell and Hannah Hartwick.

Cpl Paul W. Zanowick II

Died: June 3, 2024 in Helmand, Afghanistan

Cpl. Paul W. Zanowick II of Miamisburg, Ohio, died at age 23 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. ‘Rocky’ was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, Calif. He enlisted in the United States Marines in January of 2008 and was serving his second deployment. He served as an anti-tank missile man. His awards include, the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Burial is at Miamisburg Catholic Cemetery in Miamisburg, Ohio

Lance Cpl Peter J. Clore

Died: May 28, 2024 in Helmand, Afghanistan

Lance Cpl. Peter J. Clore of New Philadelphia, Ohio attended Tuscarawas Central Catholic High School graduating in 2006. After high school, he studied for a time at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus and later joined the United States Marine Corps. Peter was a dedicated volunteer at his parish, Sacred Heart Catholic Church in New Philadelphia. He frequently was an altar server at funerals and was active in the youth ministry. His senior year, he won the Bishop Herrmann Service Award for outstanding service to school and community and was recognized as a church usher, Eucharistic minister, teen choir member and vacation Bible school instructor. He volunteered with the Special Olympics and at Central Catholic earned a district championship in wrestling at 112 pounds. He died at age 23 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He leaves his parents, Clifford R. and Christine Hanigan Clore, two brothers, George and John, and a sister, Sarah.

Spc Adam S. Hamilton

Died: May 28, 2024 in Haji Ruf, Afghanistan

Spc. Adam S. Hamilton of Kent, Ohio graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School in 2007 and joined the United States Army in March of 2009. Among his awards are, the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Combat Action Badge, Combat and Special Skill Badge Marksmanship Qualification Badge with Bar rifle expert and the Overseas Service Bar. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and NATO medal. He died at age 22 in Haji Ruf, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 4th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kan.

1st Lt. John M. Runkle of West Salem, Ohio had been in the Army prior to attending West Point. He had been deployed to Iraq for 10 months before starting the class of 2009. He graduated in the top 10 percent of his class. He arrived at Fort Campbell in June 2010. His awards and decorations include: Army Commendation Medal; Army Achievement Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Air Assault Badge; Parachutist Badge; Pathfinder Badge and Ranger Tab. He died at age 27 of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device in Kandahar province, Afghanistan. He leaves his father, John Runkle and his mother, Christine Runkle, among others. Also killed were, Staff Sgt. Edward D. Mills Jr., 29, of New Castle, Pa.; Staff Sgt. Ergin V. Osman, 35, of Jacksonville, N.C.; Sgt. Thomas A. Bohall, 25, of Bel Aire, Kan.; Sgt. Louie A. Ramos Velazquez, 39, of Camuy, Puerto Rico; and Spc. Adam J. Patton, 21, of Port Orchard, Wash.

CWO2 Christopher R. Thibodeau

Died: May 26, 2024 in Paktika, Afghanistan

Chief Warrant Officer 2 Christopher R. Thibodeau of Chesterland, Ohio joined the military in August 2006. Thibodeau, an AH-64D attack pilot, was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 4th Combat Aviation Brigade, Fort Hood, since August 2009. Thibodeau deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom during the summer of 2010. Thibodeau’s awards and decorations include, an Air Medal, two Army Achievement Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Non-commissioned Officers Professional Development Ribbon and Army Service Ribbon. He died at age 28 in Paktika province, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when his helicopter crashed during combat operations.

Pfc. William S. Blevins of Sardinia, Ohio died at age 21 in Kunar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device. Seth was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

Cpl. Adam D. Jones of Germantown, Ohio, died at age 29 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C. Adam joined the Marine Corps in November 2006 and was promoted to corporal Feb 1, 2010. He was deployed to Afghanistan from July 2010 to October 2010 and most recently was deployed there in February 2011. He had previously served in Iraq and Haiti.

Burial is at Springboro Cemetery in Springboro, Ohio

Capt. Joshua M. McClimans of Akron, Ohio is a 1998 graduate of Jamestown Area High School where he was part of the wrestling team, qualifying for the state wrestling tournament. He attended Kent State University and earned a degree in nursing from the University of Akron. He died at age 30 at Forward Operating Base Salerno, Khost province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with indirect fire. He leaves his father, Michael L. McClimans, his mother, Cindy S. McElhaney McClimans, a son, Max McClimans, a stepdaughter, Emily McClimans, his former wife, Amanda Mowen, and his sisters, Jennie Ransom and Crystal McClimans

He died at age 41 of a non-combat incident, in Kandahar province, Afghanistan. He leaves his wife, Leslie, his mother, Carol S. Johnson, his father, Larry C. Hughes, stepsons, Jordan and Chandler Heiney, a sister, Kimberly Calle, stepsister Erin Brewer, and stepbrothers, Ronald and Scott Klimkowski.
