Staff Sgt. Jonathan M. Metzger
Staff Sgt. Jonathan M. Metzger, 32, of Indianapolis, Ind., died Jan. 6 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enermy forces attacked their vehicle with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 81st Troop Command, Indiana National Guard, Indianapolis, Ind. SSgt Metzger was a career military man who spent eight years in the Marine Corps. He planned on a military career and was studying for the rank of master sergeant. He was currently serving a second deployment, having previously served a tour in Iraq. He was six weeks into a nine month tour in Afghanistan. His awards include, the Bronze Star Medal (2), Purple Heart, Army Good Conduct Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Star, Iraq Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Star, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M Device (2), Noncommissioned Officers Professional Development Ribbon (2), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, NATO medal, Combat Action Badge and Driver and Mechanic Badge.

Spc. Robert J. Tauteris Jr., 44, of Hamlet, Ind., died Jan. 6 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enermy forces attacked their vehicle with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 81st Troop Command, Indiana National Guard, Indianapolis, Ind. Bobby was a 1986 graduate of North Judson San Pierre High School. He was on his second tour of duty. Spc Tauteris re-enlisted in the National Guard after his 21-year-old son, Robert III, joined up and was sent to Afghanistan. Robert III accompanied his father’s body back to the U.S. His awards include, the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal w/ Campaign Star (2), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal w/ M device (2), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Combat Action Badge, and Driver and Mechanic Badge w/ Driver-Wheeled Vehicle (S) Clasp.

Pfc. Justin M. Whitmire, 20, of Easley, S.C., died Dec. 27, in Paktia, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 720th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas. He is a 2010 graduate of Hillcrest High School where he was on the debate team. He joined the military in September 2010 as a health care specialist and was assigned to the 720th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade, Fort Hood, since September 2011. Pfc Whitmire deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in July 2011. His awards and decorations include, the National Defense Service Medal and Army Service Ribbon.
