Maj. Robert J. Marchanti II

Maj. Robert J. Marchanti II, 48, of Baltimore, Md., died Feb. 25, in Kabul, Afghanistan. Marchanti was assigned to 1st Battalion, 29th Infantry Division Security Partnering Team of the Maryland Army National Guard, Baltimore, Md. As a civilian, Maj Marchanti had worked as a special education physical education teacher in the Baltimore County Public Schools, most recently at Carney Elementary School. He joined the U.S. Army in 1984 and the Maryland National Guard in 1986 and had worked since May 2008 at the Fifth Regiment Armory in Baltimore as a construction and facilities management technician. Marchanti had been in Afghanistan for less than a year. As a devoted family man he adored his wife, his four children and had a 3 month old grandson.

Staff Sgt. Ahmed Kousay Altaie

On Feb. 25, the armed forces positively identified the remains of Staff Sgt. Ahmed K. Altaie, of Ann Arbor, Mich. He was assigned to the Provincial Reconstruction Team, Divisional Training Center, Special Troops Battalion, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. Altaie was kidnapped at gunpoint in October 2006 when he sneaked off base on a motorcycle to visit his Iraqi wife in central Baghdad. On Dec. 11, 2006, a casualty review board declared Altaie “missing – captured” after his disappearance in Baghdad, Iraq on Oct. 23, 2006. Altaie was the final missing soldier and casualty to be recovered from the Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation New Dawn mission.

Sgt Timothy J. Conrad Jr

Sgt. Timothy J. Conrad Jr., 22, of Roanoke, Va., died Feb. 23, in Nangarhar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his unit came under small arms fire. TJ was assigned to the 385th Military Police Battalion, 16th Military Police Brigade (Airborne), XVIII Airborne Corps, Fort Stewart, Ga. Sgt Conrad was posthumously promoted and awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Combat Action Badge and NATO Medal.

Sgt. Joshua A. Born

February 25th, 2012

Sgt. Joshua A. Born, 25, of Niceville, Fla., died Feb. 23, in Nangarhar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his unit came under small arms fire. He was assigned to the 385th Military Police Battalion, 16th Military Police Brigade (Airborne), XVIII Airborne Corps, Fort Stewart, Ga. He attended Niceville High School and joined the Army March 15, 2007. The unit was deployed to Afghanistan in mid-January. It was his first deployment. Sgt Born was posthumously promoted and awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Combat Action Badge and NATO Medal.

Burial plans are being made by Joshua’s wife in Illinois.

Sgt. Allen R. McKenna Jr

Sgt. Allen R. McKenna Jr., 28, of Noble, Okla., died Feb. 21 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 10th Cavalry, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo. Robbie graduated from Noble High School and joined the United States Army in September of 2004. He was in his second deployment to Afghanistan, which began Sept. 6, 2011. His previous deployment was from March 2009 to March 2010. His decorations include, the Army Commendation Medal twice and the Army Achievement Medal. Sgt McKenna was married with three sons, the last one just two months old.

Sgt. Jerry D. Reed II

Sgt. Jerry D. Reed II, 30, of Russellville, Ark., died Feb. 16, in Paktika province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 172nd Separate Infantry Brigade, Grafenwoehr, Germany. He joined the Army in 2000 after graduating from Russellville High School. He served in Iraq, Germany and Korea before being stationed in Afghanistan. He loved the military and planned to make it his career. Sgt Reed spent two weeks at home in October 2011 and planned to return again in early summer of 2012. He was being transferred from Afghanistan to Germany in less than three months.

Cpl Jonathan Eric Schiller

Born: March 12, 2024 in Des Moines, Iowa
Died: December 31, 2023 in Baqubah, Iraq

Cpl Jonathan E. Schiller of Ottumwa, Iowa graduated from Ottumwa High School in 2004 where he was an actively involved student who also played basketball in the ninth and tenth grades. He was active in youth and other high school sports. Prior to joining the United States Army he worked at West Music and at Hibbett Sporting Goods. Jon was also a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. Jon showed leadership skills even during high school, although they may have been of a typical teenagers practical joking leader qualities. But in time, those take charge skills began to serve him well as he got older, particularly as he progressed through the ranks of the military. By all accounts Jon was someone who anyone would have been proud to parent, befriend, or call a comrade in arms. He died at age 20 in Baqubah, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated while on a combat patrol. Also killed was Spc. Richard A. Smith. Schiller becomes the 49th Iowan killed in Iraq or Afghanistan from combat. He leaves his parents, William (Bill) and Elizabeth (Liz) Waddle Schiller and two brothers, Charlie and Max Schiller among others.

Pfc. Cesar Cortez

Died: February 11, 2024 in Bahrain

Pfc. Cesar Cortez of Oceanside, Calif., died at age 24 in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Cortez was assigned to 5th Battalion, 52nd Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command, Fort Bliss, Texas. He is a 2005 graduate of Oceanside High School. Cortez joined the Army in March 2011 and arrived to Fort Bliss in October 2011. His awards and decorations include, the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Army Service Ribbon.

Burial is at Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego, California - Sec 12 Site 352

Pfc Joe Christopher Robinson

Born: July 22, 2024 in Bedford, Texas
Died: February 9, 2024 in Temple, Texas

Pfc Joe Christopher Robinson, 21, of Mineral Wells, Texas entered active-duty service in July 2008 as an infantryman. He was assigned to 1st Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood since January 2009. Robinson deployed to Iraq from January to December 2009. His awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal with campaign star, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon and Driver and Mechanic Badge. Robinson was transported by Fort Hood Emergency Medical Services to Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center and later to Scott and White Hospital in Temple, Texas, where he died on Feb. 9.

Burial is at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery in Dallas, Texas

Sgt. 1st Class Billy A. Sutton

Died: February 7, 2024 in Uruzgan, Afghanistan

Sgt. 1st Class Billy A. Sutton of Mooreville, Miss., died at age 42 in Uruzgan province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 223rd Engineer Battalion, 168th Engineer Brigade, Mississippi National Guard, West Point, Miss. He joined the Mississippi National Guard on September 5, 2002. He leaves his wife, Traci Sutton, to whom he married Nov. 6, 1998, his son, Tyler Durham, his mother, Jo Ann Owen Sutton Starling (Elvis), his in laws, Dan and Jennifer Loden Durham, his grandfather in law, Homer Loden of Tupelo, a brother: Danny Sutton, two half brothers, Vance Sutton and Aaron Starling, three half sisters, Adrian Starling, Erica Culver and Cindy Starling.
