Staff Sgt Mills was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He died of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle September 15 with an improvised explosive device. Joshua graduated from Silva Magnet High School in El Paso, Texas where he was a member of the Junior ROTC and was on the rifle team. In 2005, he decided to follow in the footsteps of his father, Tommy, who was an air defense soldier at Fort Bliss, Texas and join the Army. On July 15, 2009, he was deployed to Afghanistan as a communications sergeant. This was his second deployment to Afghanistan and he had also served in Guatemala. In Guatemala, Joshua taught Guatemalan soldiers to build helicopter landing zones as they fought the drug trade and in Afghanistan he trained Afghan national police to provide security for their own country. His awards and decorations include the Army Service Ribbon, Global War on Terror Ribbon, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, and National Defense Service Ribbon. He was posthumously awarded a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star and a Meritorious Service Medal.
