Sgt. Brock H. Chavers of Portal, Georgia attended Portal High School and was a well liked and respected young man in the tiny community town. Brock was one of six brothers and sisters all of which were in JROTC in school and all achieving the highest rank. Two of his older brothers serve in the National Guard. A younger brother just completed Army basic training. Brock loved to play practical jokes and make people happy. But most of all he enjoyed life. He had a big heart and a giving nature. Brock enlisted in the Georgia National Guard in 2002. He was a member of the Pine Grove Holiness Church. He died at age 25 in Konduz, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. In addition to his mother and his siblings, Brock is survived by his wife, Minnie Chavers; his son, Master Brock, Jr., a step daughter, Tamecia Reason; his mother, Mrs. Loice Chavers; father, Mr. Jimmy Chavers; 3 sisters, Veronica Chavers, Venus Chavers, and Joyce Ann Williams; 4 brothers, Sgt. 1st Class Courtney Jones, Capt. Bryan Chavers, and Staff Sgt. Victor Chavers, and Pvt. 2nd class Brandon Chavers. Brocks’ wife serves in the same National Guard unit.
