Staff Sgt. Jonathan K. Dozier of Chesapeake, Virginia was killed during ongoing operations in the Baqouba area and Diyala province in central Iraq. His family has a long tradition of military service. One of his ancestors, Thomas Lenwood Dozier, fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War as a private in the North Carolina Regiment. His Great-Great Grandfather, PVT Joseph Henry Dozier, fought with the 17th and 32nd N. C. Regiments. His maternal great grandfather, Kilian Lang, served as an artilleryman in the German army in World War I. His grandfather, Wilbur, enlisted in the Coast Guard in August 1941, just months before the U.S. entered World War II following the sneak attack by Japan on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. A year later, while serving aboard the transport ship Joseph Hewes during the Allied invasion of North Africa, he was hurt when a German submarine sunk the ship. His father, Carl, became an Army 2nd lieutenant in 1971 and was assigned to the field artillery. When he wasn’t called to active duty, he joined the 111th Field Artillery of the Virginia National Guard. He later volunteered to serve in the Middle East during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm in 1990 and 1991. He also served active duty tours in Germany and Iceland. After 28 years as an Army officer, Carl retired in 1999 as a Lieutenant Colonel. Jon first joined the Army in 1997. Then he went to Middle Tennessee State University before he re-enlisted in 2005. His awards and decorations include, the Bronze Star for Valor, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Achievement Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, NCOPD Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (2), Combat Infantry Badge, Parachute Badge and Expert Rifle Badge. He leaves his father and stepmother, Carl M. and Jean Dozier, his mother and stepfather, Martha D. and Robert Cabe, his daughter, Emma, his sister, Jennifer, stepbrother, Paul, and three stepsisters, Jill, Carla and Beth. Jon died at age 30 in Sinsil, Iraq, of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated during combat operations. Also killed were Spc. Todd E. Davis, Staff Sgt. Sean M. Gaul, Sgt. Zachary W. McBride, Sgt. 1st Class Matthew I. Pionk and Sgt. Christopher A. Sanders.
