Staff Sgt. Dain T. Venne

Staff Sgt. Dain T. Venne, 29, of Port Henry, N.Y.; died of wounds suffered Nov. 3, when enemy forces attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device in Paktia province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 178th Engineer Battalion, 412th Theater Engineer Command, Oswego, N.Y. SSG Venne served in the military for 10 years and 9 months. He is a 2001 Moriah Central School graduate where he was an oustanding athlete. He also attended St. Lawrence University. Venne was named to the 2000 all-state football team as a running back and linebacker by the New York State Sports Writers Association. In 2011 he received the Firefighter Commendation Medal from the Port Henry Fire Department for his life saving actions while rescuing several stranded victims during an August 2011 Tropical Storm. Staff Sgt Venne was currently serving his fourth deployment. St Patrick's Cemetery in Moriah, New York.
