Sgt. Demetrius Lamar Void

Demetrius L. Void, of Orangeburg, South Carolina, an intelligent, fun loving young man, with high moral standards and the manners of a southern gentleman. He expected others to also behave properly, and he would frequently ask his fellow classmates to fix what they were wearing, like tucking in their shirts or pulling their pants up higher. He held God and his mother as his heroes- his whole family meant the world to his tender heart. Demetrius expressed a desire to serve his country from a young age, wishing to make a difference in the world. In high school was a member of the JROTC program. He enlisted after his 2007 graduation from Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School, waving goodbye to his beloved wine-colored Chevy Impala as he left home. He graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in December 2007, then transferred to Fort Hood, Texas. Assigned to the 57th Expeditionary Signal Battalion, 11th Signal Brigade, III Corps, he deployed to Afghanistan in April. He died September 15 at Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when a military vehicle struck him while conducting physical training. He was promoted from specialist to sergeant posthumously. Demetrius’ final resting place is Belleville Memorial Gardens in Orangeburg, South Carolina.
