Specialist Tyler R. Walshe Vietti, of Shasta, California. At the age of three years, Tyler’s mother, Dawn, married Paul Vietti, and Tyler grew up in a home filled with love and respect. A talented athlete, Tyler was a star football, basketball and baseball player for Central Valley High School. Standing 6′ 3″ tall, he was the quarterback who led his senior football team to a 12-0 record, and was courted by several local schools for future playing. His devotion to his school over-ruled. Tyler always had a positive outlook about life, always wishing to make everyone happy. He was polite, kind, a mentor and positive role model to anyone who came in contact with him. After his 2006 graduation, Tyler enlisted in the United States Army in October. He took basic training at Fort Benning and then transfered to Fort Lewis, Washington. It was while stationed here he met and married the love of his life, Kirsten. Assigned to the 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, he deployed with them to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in July of 2009. This was his first deployment. Tyler died August 31 in southern Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. Tyler had written that his only fear in life was loosing his family and that his parents were his hero’s. He never thought he’d become one himself. In his 21 short years he held many roles- son, brother, star athlete, husband, father, soldier…hero.
