Travis Picantine attended Sesser-Valier Community Unit School in Illinois before enlisting in the United States Army in April 2007. He received basic training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, Georgia before being transferred to Fort Drum, New York to serve with the 10th Mountain Division. He served a tour of duty in Afghanistan and then reported back to Fort Drum. His mother Tammie Jo Goessman Severs and her husband, Keith, his sister Megan and her family and several other relatives, survive Travis. His father, John Robert Picantine passed away in 1995. Travis is buried in Mitchell Cemetery just outside of Sesser, Illinois.
