Spc Russell Shane Hercules, Jr

Spc. Russell S. Hercules Jr. of Murfreesboro, Tennessee was a 2006 graduate of Blackman High School. Before that, he attended Mitchell-Neilson and Bradley Elementary schools, then Central Middle School. After doing a report of the war in Iraq during his junior year, Russell became interested in joining the military. A year later as a senior, he spoke to recruiters and soon after graduation he enlisted in the United States Army. His initial training was at Fort Benning, Georgia before being stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas from 2006 to 2008. He deployed in February of 2007 through May of 2008 to Baghdad, Iraq, where he was part of the personal security detachment for one of the officers. He signed up for four more years and was sent to Fort Campbell in the fall of 2008. Russell was content there since it was closer to home. Two months later be began a second tour, this time to Afghanistan. Russell had gotten married in June of 2008 during one of his home leaves. Russell is survived by his wife Victoria, his 4-month-old son Christopher, stepdaughter Cadence, father Russell Hercules and mother and Cheryl Tipton. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Russell died at age 22 in Wardak province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire.
