Spc. Roberto A. Hernandez II, of Far Rockaway, New York attended August Martin High School graduating in 2006 before attending Tuskegee University in Alabama. Rob joined the military in September 2007 while he was in college. He was nearing the end of a 14-month tour of duty with only a month lefty to go in Iraq. He volunteered for Afghanistan immediately after basic training. By joining the military, he had followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, his mother and two uncles. The family was originally from Panama, and Rob’s grandfather came to the United States in 1969 after enlisting. He used his military pay to bring his remaining family to the states. Roberto was the first American from a family of Panamanian Immigrants. He was a religious man who put his family first and was a member of the Christian Cultural Center in Brooklyn. He had plans to become a private investigator after his service was up. He died at age 21 in Paktya, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when his mounted patrol was attacked with an improvised explosive device and small arms fire.

Thanks for everything. You showed me how to make my bed and you always beat me in the rifle races. I beat you in wrestling that one time in the changing bay then the drill sergeants came up and smoked us for playing around. You used to keep me up late at night singing random songs. Remember after bayonet training, KILL!!! You were always motivated and kept spirits high. Thank you for being there.
