Spc Michael Ray Hayes

Spc. Michael R. Hayes of Morgantown, Kentucky is the son of Barley Ann Gray Hayes and the late Jesse Ray Hayes. He graduated from Greenwood High School and Kentucky Advanced Technology Institute and had attended Western Kentucky University. Michael had hoped to be a college soccer coach one day. He was currently the first girls soccer coach at Butler County High School, where he had been head coach for five years. He also coached for four years at Greenwood High School. He was a recipient of numerous awards in soccer, including All Regional Player of the Year in soccer his senior year at Greenwood High School. Michael wanted to be a college soccer coach one day. He was home for a visit recently and took the soccer team out to dinner and a movie. If a plater wanted to work extra, he’d come in early or stay late. He spent his own money, buying food for the team or taking them someplace for team-building. His Awards and Decorations include, the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, National Defense Ribbon, Army Achievement Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon and Kentucky Distinguished Medal. He was a Boy Scout and attended Living Hope Baptist Church. He was killed at age 29 when a rocket-propelled grenade hit his Humvee while he was providing security cordon for an improvised explosive device found earlier in Baghdad.
