Spc Michael Daniel Rivera
Birth: Jun. 6, 1984 in New York
Death: Mar. 7, 2007 in Baghdad, Iraq
Spc. Michael D. Rivera of Brooklyn, New York was born and raised in Sunset Park. He joined the military when his older brother, Alfredo, returned from boot camp. Seeing what the military had done for Alfredo, and the look of authority he possessed, Michael knew that was what he wanted too. He was sent to Iraq in October after being stationed at several Army bases in the United States and then in Korea, where he met his wife at a dance. He kept in touch, e-mailing his brother and posting messages on his mother’s MySpace page. He was an average kid who liked playing with and fixing computers. He was respectful and willing to help anyone. Michael died only six months after the birth of his daughter who was born on her grandmother’s birthday for whom the baby was named after. He was one of three soldiers killed when an explosive detonated near their vehicle in Baghdad. He was 22.
