Born: July 26, 1990 in Valparaiso, Indiana
Died: September 28, 2011 in Helmand, Afghanistan

Spc. James A. Butz, 21, of Porter, Ind., died Sept. 28 in Helmand province, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C. Jim is a 2009 graduate of Chesterton High School. He joined the Army in 2009 and had served with Headquarters and Headquarters Company since 2010. His awards include, the Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal and the Combat Action Badge.
