Spc. Gerardo Campos
Spc. Gerardo Campos, 23, of Miami, Fla., died June 2 in Maiwand, Afghanistan, when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire. He was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash. He joined the Army in 2010 and was assigned to the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team later that year. This was his first deployment. Campos had been awarded the Bronze Star, among other military honors. After graduating high school in 2007, Campos began his military career. He joined the Army in March 2010 and was assigned to the Washington base that September. He went through infantryman training, the U.S. Army Airborne School and an Army leadership course. In April, his unit was sent to Afghanistan for the 23-year-old’s first deployment. Campos was known for his motivating spirit and maturity — marks of a future leader, said his friend 1st Sgt. John Knight in an Army release.
