Sgt Joshua Andrew Schmit
Born: September 30, 1980 in Willmar, Minnesota
Died: April 14, 2007 in Fallujah, Iraq
Sgt. Joshua Schmit of Willmar, Minnisota joined the Minnesota National Guard after graduating from Willmar High School in 1999 but soon decided he wanted to move into the active-duty Army. He was looking at going to school in the culinary arts. He loved to cook and when he moved to Germany, he’d always hang around the restaurants and learn how to cook the dishes. Joshua took pride in serving in the Army, something he did out of patriotism and to continue a family tradition of military service. One of Joshua’s grandfathers served in the Army, and Greg Schmit has been in the National Guard for 12 years. He died just 10 days before he was scheduled to leave Iraq, rejoin his wife, Andrea, in Germany, then move back to the United States. He died at age 26 in Fallujah, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Also killed was Sgt. Brandon L. Wallace.
