Sgt. Jesse M. Balthaser of Columbus, Ohio is a West High School graduate who exhibited a desire to serve in the military at a young age. Jesse had a unique combination of being tough and tender at the same time, and always had a good sense of humor. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2005 and had deployed twice to Iraq, once in 2006 and again in 2008. He was currently serving his first deployment to Afghanistan. His Awards and Decorations include, the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and NATO medal. Jesse and his girlfriend, Erin are expecting a child in December 2010. He is the son of Rick and Nancy Balthaser. He died at age 23 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
