Sgt. James L. Skalberg Jr., 25, of Cullman, Ala., died June 27, in Maidan Shahr, Wardak province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to 4th Battalion, 1st Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Fort Bliss, Texas. Jamie grew up in Emerson, graduating from Nishna Valley High School in 2005, before attending Peru State College. He joined the U.S. Army in February 2007 and was deployed with his unit to Iraq in 2008-09. Among his awards are, the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Achievement Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Driver’s Badge, Air Assault Badge and Combat Action Badge. Also killed was 1st Lt. Stephen C. Parasnicki of Lexington, Va. The brigade deployed in October 2011 and is scheduled to return in July 2012.
