Petty Officer 1st Class Vincent A. Filpi III

Petty Officer 1st Class Vincent A. Filpi III of Fort Walton Beach, Florida and Virginia Beach, Virginia enlisted in the United States Navy in April of 1992. After attending Naval Aviation Schools Command in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, he was assigned to the carrier Saratoga for two years before heading to the carrier Kitty Hawk. He would later head to the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit and Strike Fighter Squadron 37, both in Lemoore, California. His career also included tours in Sigonella, Sicily, Oceana, Virginia and Norfolk, Virginia. He served aboard the carrier Theodore Roosevelt before being assigned to the Enterprise in May of 2009. Petty Officer 1st Class Filpi served as the Safety Department’s leading petty officer while on the Enterprise. He was quoted in a September 7 Navy news story, encouraging sailors to avoid becoming complacent and unaware of the details of their job and to follow safety procedures, and in a January 17 Navy news story about staying safe during underway replenishments. His awards include, a Meritorious Unit Commendation and two Good Conduct Medals. Vincent died at age 41 as a result of a non-combat related incident. He was assigned to USS Enterprise as an aviation ordnanceman. Enterprise is currently deployed to the Fifth Fleet area of responsibility conducting operations in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He leaves his wife, Erica, his children, Aleksandra, Nicholai, Brianna, Davan and Taelin McRae, and Vincent Filpi IV, his parents, Donna and Vincent Filpi II, and two brothers, Doug Filpi and James Filpi.
