Master Sgt. Bernard L. Deghand, of Kansas attended Shawnee Heights High School in Tecumseh and had lived in Hoyt before moving to Mayetta last year. He had served in the National Guard for 22 years and was supposed to come home in October for a two-week leave. Bernie always wanted to be serviceman. During his time overseas, he only spoke about the dangers of being in a war zone to his older brother because he never wanted to worry his wife and children. The youngest of six as a child, Bernard’s personality was care-free, onry, fearless and full of energy. Deghand is the uncle of Washburn University football player Jarod Tetuan. Deghand leaves behind his wife, Lisa, and three children ages 19, 11, and 18 months. He was 42.
