Marine Lance Cpl. Jakub Henryk Kowalik of Schaumburg, Illinois mcame to the United States from Poland in 1992 and was a permanent resident, though not yet a citizen. He attended Maine East High School in Park Ridge, Illinois and enlisted in the Marine Corps during his senior year. He was killed at age 21 in Iraq when unexploded ordnance he was handling detonated.
