Maj. Tad T. Hervas

Maj. Tad T. Hervas, 48, of Coon Rapids, Minn., was in the R.O.T.C. during his college days at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Afterwards he served in the United States Air Force as a flight navigator during the first Gulf War- Desert Storm. He returned to civilian life in 1991 and worked for a furnace/ fireplace industry. Moved by the events of 9-11, he wanted to re-enlist in the Air Force, but was denied because of his age. The Minnesota National Guard welcomed his experience, and he served them as the commander of the Cloquet based 216th Air Defense Artillery Echo Battery for 3 years. He was transferred and put in charge of coordinating the air space over Baghdad, Iraq. His first tour in Iraq from 2004-2005 with Red Bull’s was successful, all his men returned home safe. During this tour he received a citation for capturing one of Saddam Hussein’s security officers. In February of 2009, he deployed again assigned to the 34th Infantry Regiment, Rosemont, Minnesota, working as a military intelligence officer. Tad had just returned to Iraq the week before his death after being home on leave for 2 weeks. He died at Contingency Operating Base Basra, Iraq, of injuries sustained from a non-combat related incident. Tad respected everybody and was particularly caring for his parents. He had several friends whom shared his friendship a very long time. He was truly devoted to maintaining them. Tad was buried at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
