Lance Cpl. Sean P. Maher of Grays Lake, Illinois was a 2003 graduate of Warren Township High School where he was an all-around athlete who loved playing football. At 5 feet 8 inches and 145 pounds, Sean was one of his school’s smaller linebackers, but he was one of the toughest. During his senior year, he intercepted a pass to win a game against rival Mundelein High School. He enrolled at Southern Illinois University upon graduation, but soon had a change of heart about his future. Shortly after the war in Iraq broke out, he enlisted in the Marines because he thought he could make a difference in Iraq. As a Marine, Sean Maher stood out. He was selected by his platoon leader to participate in a 21-gun salute on Pearl Harbor Day last year. In his community, he was considered a caring young man who could always be counted on to lend a hand. After his enlistment, he planned to attend college and take advantage of the educational benefits of the GI Bill. Sean was a good and kind young man who would help a neighbor shovel snow just to help out. He leaves his parents, Dan and Janet Maher, a brother, Daniel and a sister, Katie, among others. Sean had just two days left to serve in Iraq when he was killed at age 19 in an ambush.
