Lance Cpl Robert John Newton
Lance Cpl. Robert J. Newton of Creve Coeur, Illinois is a 2007 graduate of East Peoria Community High School. R.J. joined the Marine Corps in June of 2007 and was serving his second combat deployment. He was previously deployed to Iraq in 2008. His Awards and Decorations include, the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Presidential Unit Citation, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment and the NATO Medal. RJ enjoyed hunting, rock climbing, and playing baseball. He also enjoyed time spent just hanging out with family and friends or driving his 4×4 truck. At his memorial service his family and friends told stories of a friend with a ‘cheesy smile’ who instigated a lot of good-hearted mischief, a guy who was a ‘magnet’ that attracted other people to him and who was ‘the kind of friend that would always turn a boring time into a blast.’ He leaves his parents, Richard B. and Denise R. Wainscott Newton and a sister, Breanna. He died at age 21 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
