Died: January 9, 2010 in Helmand, Afghanistan

Lance Cpl. Mark D. Juarez of San Antonio, Texas, is the son of Cynthia Flores and George Juarez and was a graduate of Holy Cross High School in 2005. Mark could be shy and reserved until he got to know you better, but once that hurdle was passed, he was warm and funny and could always keep a smile on your face. But he lived life with gusto and was ecstatic the first time he made a half-court shot in basketball. As a very young child, he once declared he was going to catch a whale after he got his first fishing pole for Christmas. He had been a Marine for more than two years and couldn’t imagine himself doing anything else. He had already served one nine month tour in Iraq and was currently serving his first tour in Afghanistan where he had been since November 2009. Although the prospect of Mark leaving to fight overseas was difficult for his family, he loved being a Marine. In addition to his parents, he leaves a son, Aron, a brother, Dominic, his grandmother, Elida Flores, grandparents, Porfirio and Minerva Juarez, Sr. Mark died at age 23 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
