Lance Cpl. Eugene C. Mills III

Born: November 19, 1990
Died: June 22, 2012 in Helmand, Afghanistan

Lance Cpl. Eugene C. Mills III, 21, of Laurel, Maryland died June 22 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C. Gene was a graduate of Atholton High School in Columbia. Ask anyone from the neighborhood where he grew up and you’ll hear the same words over and again. Little Gene, as many called him, was always respectful, polite and courteous; traits he learned from his family, in particular his parents. As a Marine, Gino or ‘Gino Bambino’, (another nickname) stood as the epitome of a polished marine and could have been the poster boy for recruitment. But it was more than how he appeared. Gene talked the talk and walked the walk of an enlisted man. He put everything into being the few and the proud. Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia – Sec 60 Site 10070

Although we never met, we had a mutual bond, as we are both Marines. We became friends on FaceBook, through my Nephew who was serving with Gene and we spoke on FB many times. Our last chat was a week before his death and we discussed hunting and fishing and were making plans, for their return.
This Marine will always have a place in his heart, for Gene and will never forget his sacrifice. Stand Down L/Cpl Mills, the mission has ended, Rest in Peace, your Brother Marines await your arrival at Heaven’s Gate.
