Lance Cpl. Derek W. Jones of Salem, Oregon was a 2003 graduate of Sprague High School where he played football and racquetball. At age 21, he had already experienced a great deal of life. Marriage, a daughter, Marine Corps, and your in Afghanistan and was currently serving a tour in Iraq. The young marine was an outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing. While working at McDonald’s he had met his future wife, Pamela. Derek flirted with her and won her over. The couple eloped to Hawaii and came back home to large reception of well wishers. Now she was taking care of their young daughter while he was away, using email and brief phone calls to keep him updated on life back home. Derek joined the Marine Corps in 2003 and served eight months in Afghanistan before leaving for Iraq. He planned to go to college to become an architect after his service in the Marines. He died at age 21 from wounds sustained while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Anbar province, Iraq. Also killed were: Lance Cpl. Jeremy S. Sandvick Monroe and Capt. Robert M. Secher.
