Lance Cpl Brian Anthony Medina
Born: December 19 1983
Died: November 12, 2004 in Fallujah, Iraq
Lance Cpl. Brian A. Medina of Woodbridge, Virginia is a 2002 Gar-Field High School graduate. He learned the acrobatic hip-hop dance style of break dancing while living in Italy with his mother during his first three years of high school. When he returned to the United States to live with his father during his senior year, Medina started a break-dancing club at Gar-Field. Brian wanted to eventually be a U.S. Embassy bodyguard and saw service in the Marines as an avenue toward that goal. His father, Gregory Medina, retired from a career in the Navy, his grandfather served in the U.S. Army and an uncle, Cecil Medina, is a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force. Following the events of September 11, Brian was more eager than ever to join the military. Something about that day hit home with him and just after graduation he enlisted. He had been in Iraq since September of 2004. While serving in Iraq, Brian got all the Marines in his unit to autograph an Iraqi flag and then sent it home to his family. He is survived by his parents, Lolita Converse and Gregory Medina, a sister and two brothers. Brian was killed at age 20 by enemy action in Anbar province, Iraq. Also killed, according to the Pentagon, was Lance Cpl. David M. Branning.
