Gunnery Sgt. Jonathan W. Gifford
Gunnery Sgt. Jonathan W. Gifford, 34, of Palm Bay, Fla., died July 29 while conducting combat operations in Badghis province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion, Camp Lejeune, N.C. Jonathan is a 1996 graduate of Melbourne Catholic High where he played soccer and baseball. GSgt Gifford was just shy of 15 years in the service. A member of the Corps’ force reconnaissance community prior to joining MARSOC, he also completed multiple combat deployments and earned a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with combat “V,”. In 1996, Jonathan and his brother, Matthew, were listed as academically outstanding students by Saint Leo College. That year, Jonathan was one of the college’s eight soccer team members to make the Sunshine State Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll. He was in Afghanistan for seven months and was due to come home in a month.
