Sgt. Joshua R. Ashley

Sgt. Joshua R. Ashley of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., died at age 23 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 2nd Law Enforcement Battalion, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C. Ashley graduated in 2007 from Etiwanda High School where he lettered all four years of high school in water polo and swimming, and was captain of the water polo team. He enlisted in the Marines in 2008. After boot camp, Ashley was deployed to Okinawa, Japan, from 2009 to 2011, and was stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina from 2011 to when he was deployed to Afghanistan in May of 2012. Among his awards are, the Purple Heart, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (with 2 Bronze Stars), Global War on Terrorism Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, Afghanistan Campaign (with Bronze Star), NATO ISAF Afghanistan Medal, Pistol Expert Badge and Rifle Expert Badge. In 2010, Joshua was selected as Marine of the Quarter and subsequently Marine of the Year for Marine Corps Base Okinawa. Bellevue Cemetery in Ontario, California. – Deodar West Sec Lot 409 Grave 6
