Cpl. Gurpreet Singh of Antelope, California immigrated with his family in 2000 to the United States and attended Oakmont High School in Roseville. After after high school, Gurpreet enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on November 5, 2007, training at Camp Pendleton. The decision to join the Marines was something he had wanted to do since he was a young boy. He served two combat deployments. His service awards include the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal and Afghanistan Campaign Medal. Cpl Singh was almost at the end of his four-year service, but extended his time to cover for someone who wanted to take a leave of absence. He had been in Afghanistan for seven months. He died at age 21 from wounds received while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He leaves his father, Nirmal, his mother, Satnam, and a sister Manpreet.
