Staff Sgt Jorge Antonio Scatliffe

Died: April 3, 2011 in Mosul Iraq

Staff Sgt. Jorge A. Scatliffe of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands joined the United States Army in April of 1998 as a Bradley fighting vehicle system maintainer and was assigned to Fort Hood in April of 2005. He deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from April of 2003 through August of 2004, and from December of 2005 through December of 2006, and again from June of 2008 to May of 2009. His awards and decorations, include two Army Commendation Medals, three Army Achievement Medals, four Army Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal with campaign stars, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbons, Army Service Ribbon, Driver and Mechanic Badge for Mechanics, Driver and Mechanic Badge for Wheel Vehicle Drivers, and Driver and Mechanic Badge for Tracked Vehicle Drivers. He died at age 32 in a non-combat related incident at Mosul, Iraq.

Capt Benjamin David Tiffner

Died: November 7, 2007 in Baghdad Governorate, Iraq

Capt. Benjamin D. Tiffner of Pigeon, West Virginia attended Cross Lanes Christian School where he played varsity basketball and soccer. He received part of his education at home, the last three years. Ben had wanted to be a military officer since he was a young man. He had this in the back of his mind even as he was in the process of switching from traditional school. He enrolled at the United States Military Academy at West Point and graduating in 2000. He served in Iraq from November of 2003 to March of 2004. Upon graduating from the Special Forces Qualification Course in April of 2006, he was assigned to 5th SFG(A) at Fort Campbell. His Awards and Decorations include, two Army Commendation Medals, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Parachutist Badge, Ranger Tab, and the Special Forces Tab. His parents were missionaries, and Ben grew up in the Philippines. When they returned to the United States, his father became the director of the Camp of the Hills, a 100 acre Christian related family camp near the junction of Roane, Clay and Kanawha counties. He leaves his parents, Timothy and Judith Tiffner, sisters, Rebekah and Sarah and brothers, Joshua and Seth Tiffner. Ben died at age 31 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when he was struck by an improvised explosive device.

Staff Sgt Floyd Everett Lake, Sr

Died: January 20, 2007 in Iraq

Staff Sgt. Floyd E. Lake of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands enlisted in the Army in 1988 and finished a four-year tour, before joining the Army National Guard. He was a supervisor on St. Thomas before moving in 1991 to St. Croix, where he accepted a foreman position with the National Guards U.S. Property and Fiscal Office. In 2004, he transferred to the National Guard Bureau, where he was responsible for $3 million worth of equipment and property. He is credited with establishing a logistics system to serve more than 250 personnel there. He was a soldier who paid attention to detail and took care of his co-workers. He set himself apart as a soldier of the utmost professionalism and dedication. Floyd is survived by his wife, Linda, and five children. He died in Baghdad when the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter he was in crashed. He was 43. Also killed were Col. Brian D. Allgood, Staff Sgt. Darryl D. Booker, Sgt. 1st Class John G. Brown, Lt. Col. David C. Canegata, Command Sgt. Maj. Marilyn L. Gabbard, Command Sgt. Maj. Roger W. Haller, Col. Paul M. Kelly, Cpl. Victor M. Langarica, Capt. Sean E. Lyerly, Maj. Michael V. Taylor and 1st Sgt. William T. Warren.

Lt Col David Cornelius Canegata, III

Died: January 20, 2007 in Baghdad, Iraq

Lt. Col. David C. Canegata of St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands, attended St. Mary’s before attending St. Josephs Catholic school. He went on to graduate in 1978 with a Bachelor’s degree from Carroll College Bachelor’s degree Wisconsin where he majored in history with a minor in business. After joining the National Guard in 1985, David completed Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia and the Officer Basic Course at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland where he was commissioned an ordnance officer. He was the USVI National Guard’s deputy chief of staff for operations and planning, J-2-J3, of the Virgin Islands National Guard. He was a primary adviser to the adjutant general on matters concerning intelligence, security, military support, training, aviation support and counter drug operations. David was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star for his contributions and meritorious service in Iraq as well as the Afghanistan Campaign Medal and Virgin Island Distinguished Service Medal.
