2nd Lt. David E. Rylander

Died: May 2, 2012 in Logar province, Afghanistan

2nd Lt. David E. Rylander, 23, of Stow, Ohio died May 2 in Logar province, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 7th Engineer Battalion, 10th Sustainment Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y. Dave was home schooled. He joined the Army in May of 2011 after his graduation from West Point. He arrived at Fort Drum in November 2011. He was deployed with his unit in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in January 2012. Rylander won numerous decorations and awards including the Purple Heart, the NATO Medal, the National Service Defense Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Combat Action Badge and the Parachutists Badge. While at West Point, Rylander completed small arms weapons and airborne courses.

Burial is at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery

Sgt. John Patrick Huling

Sgt. John P. Huling, 25, of West Chester, Ohio, died May 6 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 7th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif. Known best as, J.P., he attended St. Michael School in Sharonville before continuing his private Catholic school education at Moeller in Montgomery.  JP enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2006. He deployed to Iraq in 2007. He was serving his second tour of duty. He re-enlisted after serving in Iraq. His awards include the Purple Heart, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Iraq Campaign Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal.

Capt. Nicholas J. Rozanski, 36, of Dublin, Ohio died April 4, in Faryab province, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained during an enemy attack by a suicide vehicle borne improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Ohio National Guard, Walbridge, Ohio. He had been a member of the Ohio National Guard since 2003 and was serving his third deployment.

Master Sgt Jeffrey J. Rieck

Master Sgt Jeffrey J. Rieck, 45, of Columbus, Ohio died April 4, in Faryab province, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained during an enemy attack by a suicide vehicle borne improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Ohio National Guard, Walbridge, Ohio. SFC Rieck, a native of Sidney graduated from Sinclair Community College in 1994 with an associate’s degree in visual communications. He was posthumously promoted from Sgt 1st Class to Master Sergeant.

Master Sgt Shawn T. Hannon

Master Sgt Shawn T. Hannon, 44, of Grove City, Ohio died April 4, in Faryab province, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained during an enemy attack by a suicide vehicle borne improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Ohio National Guard, Walbridge, Ohio. Shawn also worked as chief legal counsel for the Ohio Department of Veterans Services, joining the state veterans agency last year. He felt it was a privilege to serve his country and did so honorably for almost 20 years. SFC Hannon was a graduate of the Capital University School of Law. He and his wife have a 9-month-old son. He was posthumously promoted from Sgt 1st Class to Master Sergeant.

Staff Sgt. Christopher L. Brown

Staff Sgt. Christopher L. Brown, 26, of Columbus, Ohio, died April 3, in Kunar province, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained after he was attacked with an improvised explosive device while on a dismounted patrol. Brown was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo. He was serving his third deployment. His first was from Aug. 2004 to July 2005 in Iraq, and the second was from June 2009 to May 2010 to Afghanistan. He was posthumously awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal.

Public viewing will begin at 10:00 am until time of funeral service at 11:00 am with full military honors to follow.

1st. Lt. Ashley I. White Stumpf

Died: October 22, 2011 in Kandahar, Afghanistan

1st. Lt. Ashley I. White, 24, of Alliance, Ohio, assigned to 230th Brigade Support Battalion, 30th Heavy Brigade Combat Team, North Carolina National Guard, Goldsboro, N.C., died Oct. 22, in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked the unit with an improvised explosive device. Also killed were Sgt. 1st Class Kristoffer B. Domeij, 29, of San Diego and Pfc. Christopher A. Horns, 20, of Colorado Springs. Ashley graduated in 2005 from Marlington High School. She was commissioned as an officer after graduating Kent State University in 2009 and trained at Fort Sam Houston, Texas and Fort Benning, Ga. before being assigned to the 230th Brigade Support Battalion, where she served as an evacuation platoon leader. She deployed in August to serve her first tour in Afghanistan. Her military education includes the Medical Service Corps Officer Basic Course and the U.S. Army Airborne Course. Her awards and decorations include, the Parachutist Badge, the Ohio Faithful Service Ribbon, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, the Army Reserve Achievement Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. She was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal and the Combat Action Badge.

Chief Petty Officer Raymond J. Border

Born: July 22, 1980 in Coshocton, Ohio
Died: October 19, 2011 in Paktika, Afghanistan

Chief Petty Officer Raymond J. Border, 31, of West Lafayette, Ohio, died Oct. 19 while assessing a route in Paktika province, Afghanistan. Border, a Navy Seabee, was assigned to a provincial reconstruction team in Paktika province, Afghanistan. His home unit was Navy Mobile Construction Battalion 74 in Gulfport, Miss. Ray attended Ridgewood High School and has served as a Seabee since 1999. Among his awards are, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, which he received three times, the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, medals for expertise with a rifle and pistol, and the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation.

Burial is at Plainfield Cemetery in Plainfield, Ohio

Staff Sgt. Robert Brian Cowdrey

Died: October 13, 2011 in Kunar, Afghanistan

Staff Sgt. Robert B. Cowdrey, 39, of Atwater, Ohio, died Oct. 13 in Kunar province, Afghanistan, from injuries suffered during combat operations. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C. Brian graduated in 1990 from La Junta High School and joined the Army in June 2003. He was currently serving his fourth deployment. He first served in Iraq from July 2004 to July 2005, before deploying three times to Afghanistan; from January 2007 to February 2008, from April 2009 to March 2010, and the last tour began in August 2011. His awards include, the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medals for valor, Army Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal. Sgt. Cowdrey was also awarded various humanitarian and service medals and ribbons during his time in the military.

Burial is at Fairview Cemetery in La Junta, Colorado
