2nd Lt. David E. Rylander, 23, of Stow, Ohio died May 2 in Logar province, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 7th Engineer Battalion, 10th Sustainment Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y. Dave was home schooled. He joined the Army in May of 2011 after his graduation from West Point. He arrived at Fort Drum in November 2011. He was deployed with his unit in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in January 2012. Rylander won numerous decorations and awards including the Purple Heart, the NATO Medal, the National Service Defense Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Combat Action Badge and the Parachutists Badge. While at West Point, Rylander completed small arms weapons and airborne courses.
Burial is at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery

Sgt. John P. Huling, 25, of West Chester, Ohio, died May 6 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 7th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif. Known best as, J.P., he attended St. Michael School in Sharonville before continuing his private Catholic school education at Moeller in Montgomery. JP enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2006. He deployed to Iraq in 2007. He was serving his second tour of duty. He re-enlisted after serving in Iraq. His awards include the Purple Heart, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Iraq Campaign Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal.
Capt. Nicholas J. Rozanski, 36, of Dublin, Ohio died April 4, in Faryab province, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained during an enemy attack by a suicide vehicle borne improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Ohio National Guard, Walbridge, Ohio. He had been a member of the Ohio National Guard since 2003 and was serving his third deployment.
Master Sgt Jeffrey J. Rieck, 45, of Columbus, Ohio died April 4, in Faryab province, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained during an enemy attack by a suicide vehicle borne improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Ohio National Guard, Walbridge, Ohio. SFC Rieck, a native of Sidney graduated from Sinclair Community College in 1994 with an associate’s degree in visual communications. He was posthumously promoted from Sgt 1st Class to Master Sergeant.
Master Sgt Shawn T. Hannon, 44, of Grove City, Ohio died April 4, in Faryab province, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained during an enemy attack by a suicide vehicle borne improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Ohio National Guard, Walbridge, Ohio. Shawn also worked as chief legal counsel for the Ohio Department of Veterans Services, joining the state veterans agency last year. He felt it was a privilege to serve his country and did so honorably for almost 20 years. SFC Hannon was a graduate of the Capital University School of Law. He and his wife have a 9-month-old son. He was posthumously promoted from Sgt 1st Class to Master Sergeant.
Staff Sgt. Christopher L. Brown, 26, of Columbus, Ohio, died April 3, in Kunar province, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained after he was attacked with an improvised explosive device while on a dismounted patrol. Brown was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo. He was serving his third deployment. His first was from Aug. 2004 to July 2005 in Iraq, and the second was from June 2009 to May 2010 to Afghanistan. He was posthumously awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal.
