Staff Sgt Christopher Todd Stout

Died: July 13, 2010 in Kandahar City, Afghanistan

Staff Sgt. Christopher T. Stout of Worthville, Kentucky graduated from Carroll County High School. Chris was an accomplished singer and enjoyed preaching at Worthville United Pentecostal Church. On December 7, 1997 he joined the Army and served much of his career as a rigger with the 782nd Main Support Battalion and other quartermaster units on Fort Bragg. Chris re-classed to become a chaplain’s assistant in September of 2006 and was currently serving in that capacity while in Afghanistan. His Awards and Decorations include, the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal with two Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Achievement Medal, three Army Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Combat Action Badge and Parachute Rigger Badge. After re-locating to North Carolina, Chris was a member of First Church of Fayetteville. He leaves his wife, Misty, three daughters, Jacqueline, Audreanna and Kristin, and his parents Billy and Sharon Neuner. He died at age 34 in Kandahar City, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with rifle, rocket propelled grenade, and small arms fire.

Spc Nathaniel Douglas Garvin

Died: July 12, 2010 in Kandahar, Afghanistan

Spc. Nathaniel D. Garvin of Hodgenville, Kentucky grew up in Vine Grove and attended John Hardin High School, graduating in 2007. Known as, ‘Tater’ he enjoyed playing video games, skateboarding, rock music and computers. He also enjoyed fishing in his leisure. Nate’s two older brothers were already serving in the military, and he understood and appreciated the stability that serving could also offer him. His Awards and Decorations include, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with arrowhead, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, NATO Medal; and Weapons Qualification: M4, expert. Nate died at age 20 at Forward Operating Base Frontenac, Afghanistan of injuries sustained from a non-combat related incident. He leaves his wife, Brittany P. Garvin a daughter, Kayleigh, a son, Wyatt, his parents Melanie S. and Clifton W. Garvin, three brothers, T.J. Garvin, Alex M. Garvin, Jeremy A. Garvin, and a sister, Whitney.

Pfc Michael Shane Pridham, Jr

Died: July 6, 2010 in Qalat, Afghanistan

Pfc. Michael S. Pridham of Louisville, Kentucky attended Southern High School with his sites set on enlisting in the military. The oldest of four boys, Mikey figured the experience would offer him a better future. And so far it certainly had been good for him. The changes he made were immediate to his family as soon as he completed basic training. He was mature, and more focused on his life goals. Before his deployment, he married his girlfriend Deidre Leitner, who is expecting their child late in 2010. Michael was looking forward to getting back home from his tour and with just six more weeks before being back stateside, he would be home for the birth of his first child. He died at age 19 at Qalat, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked their vehicle with an improvised explosive device. He leaves his wife, Deidre, and their unborn daughter, Aliyah, his father and step-mother, Michael Shane and Andrea Pridham Sr., his mother, Keri Allen, brothers, Jeffrey, Joey Pridham and Kaleb Nix and Kaden Eskridge.

Sgt 1st Class Kristopher David Chapleau

Died: June 30, 2010 at Forward Operating Base Blessing, Afghanistan

Sgt. 1st Class Kristopher D. Chapleau of LaGrange, Kentucky graduated from Oldham County High in 1996. He enlisted in the Army in February of 1997 and arrived at Fort Campbell in January of 2009. As a Sgt First Class, he advocated for the men under his command to be treated with deserved recognition. His Awards and Decorations include, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. He died at age 33 at Forward Operating Base Blessing, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained from a non-combat related incident. He leaves his wife, Terrence, a son, Jacob and Tyler, stepdaughters, Angelica and Kimberly, his mother, Bonnie Chapleau, and father, Walter Chapleau.

Spc Russell E. Madden

Died: June 23, 2010 in Logar, Afghanistan

Spc. Russell E. Madden of Dayton, Kentucky graduated from Bellevue High School in 2000 where he was a standout athlete, lettering each of his four years there. He ran track and played football with a high degree of enthusiasm and athletic ability. During the 1999 football season, Russ played linebacker, running back and various other positions in that undefeated year. The son of Martin Madden and Peggy Strange Davitt enlisted in the military to provide a future for his young family. Married and the father of two boys, one of which has Cystic Fibrosis, the benefits certainly factored in his decision. But in addition to that, Russell found that he wanted to do his part for his country. Serving his first deployment, he wanted to be out front among his comrades fighting this war. During his service in the Army, he received, a Posthumous Award Promotion to Specialist, a Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and the NATO Medal, Combat Action Badge. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. In addition to his parents, he leaves his wife, Michelle, a son Parker, Stepson, Jared, stepmother, Pamela Madden, stepfather Mike Davitt, a brother, Martin, and a sister, Lindsey. He died at age 29 at Charkh district, Konar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his vehicle with rocket fire. He had volunteered to be the lead gunner in a convoy escort detail when the convoy came under heavy fire.

Staff Sgt James Patrick Hunter

Staff Sgt. James P. Hunter of South Amherst, Ohio and Lexington, Kentucky graduated from Firelands High School in 2003. Although he grew up in northern Ohio, he loved Kentucky where he also had strong ties. He loved his country, loved the United States Army and had a heart for trying to help wherever he was needed. James had been in Afghanistan less than a month serving as an army journalist. But he already was a war veteran, having served two previous combat tours in Iraq. His Awards and Decorations include, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officers Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Combat Action Badge, Parachutist Badge and Weapons Qualification, M4, expert. James leaves his fiancée, Candice whom he became engaged to on Valentine’s Day 2010. his father and stepfather, William “Tom” Hunter, and Mary Ellen Hunter, his mother and stepfather, Patricia Phillips and Rick Phillips, brothers, Thomas, Daniel, Timothy, and Cpl Billy Hunter, a sister Kathy Hunter, and half sister, US Navy Chief Petty Officer Charity Morgan. He died at age 25 in Kandahar, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.

Lance Cpl Adam Daniel Peak

Lance Cpl. Adam D. Peak of Florence, Kentucky is a graduate of Boone County High School and Thomas More College, member of Alpha Delta Gamma national fraternity Rho chapter, Saints Club, Education Club, and The Villa Players theatre club. His awards and decorations include, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and NATO International Security Assistance Force Medal. He died at age 25 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He leaves his mother, Diana Peak, his father, Bruce Peak, a brother, Sean, and two sisters, Sara and Angela.

Cpl William Loyd McMillan, III

Died: July 8, 2008 in Iraq

Cpl. William L. McMillan III of Lexington, Kentucky was a standout athlete at Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia, where he was captain of the football, wrestling and lacrosse teams. He attended Virginia Military Institute in Lexington for a year before deciding to go straight into the Army. Like his father before him, Bill was destined for the military. His father was a West Point graduate who served in Vietnam. He loved the water and in his free time enjoyed wakeboarding and boating on Lake Cumberland with his family and he seem to bring laughter and light into any room he entered. Bill was serving his first tour in Iraq, stationed at Abu Ghraib, he was seven months into his deployment. He had received the Bronze Star medal, the fourth highest combat award in the service, which is unusual for his position. Bill was due home in September 2008. Bill was killed when his patrol was hit by a homemade bomb. He died at age 22 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds sustained when his patrol was struck by an improvised explosive device. He was survived by his wife, Elizabeth McDonald-McMillan, his parents W. Lloyd McMillan, Jr. and Marge McMillan, a brother Bradley, and a sister Lauren. A Lexington area chapter of the Association of the United States Army was named in part for Cpl William L. McMillan.
