Capt. John L. Hallett III of California attended St. Agnes Elementary School where he played basketball before attending De La Salle High School where he played water polo. John graduated from De La Salle in 1997, and the United States Military Academy at West Point in 2001. As a teenager he worked for the Silicon Valley Mercury News delivering newspapers. John was a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, where he was captain of the water polo team in his senior year. He joined the Army in 2001 and deployed to Iraq in 2005 and served 13 months. His unit was sent to Afghanistan in July 2009. A month later, his daughter was born. John never got to hold her. He and his wife, Lisa were married in 2004. The couple also have two sons, ages two and four and a daughter. John is survived by his wife Lisa, and their three children, Jackson, Bryce, and Heidi. He is also survived by his parents, John and Wendy Hallett, and two brothers, Christopher and Thomas. John died at age 30 in southern Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their vehicle with an improvised explosive device. Also killed were Capt. Cory Jenkins, of Arizona; Sgt. 1st Class Ronald Sawyer, of Trenton, Mo. and Pfc. Dennis Williams, of Federal Way, Washington.
