Captain Mark A. Garner of Elkin, North Carolina attended Elkin High School, graduating in 1997 where he excelled in sports. Football, basketball and baseball awards at the school are engraved with the his name. Mark went on to graduate in 2002 from United States Military Academy at West Point as a second lieutenant before being assigned to an infantry unit at Fort Bragg. He planned to spend his career as an Army officer. He won a good citizenship award from the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1997. Mark was killed in Afghanistan when a roadside bomb exploded underneath the vehicle he and three others were riding in. He and his wife, Nickala have been living in Germany where Garner was stationed in 2008.
