Spc. Justin W. Johnson of Rome, Georgia graduated in 2000 from Armuchee High School. He was a typical active teenager who enjoyed music, hunting, skydiving, scuba diving and exploring caves. He also loved music festivals such as Big Day Out in Atlanta and spending time with those he cared about. Justin was familiar with the military life. His dad had served in the Army as well as the Navy and was currently serving in the National Guard. His brother, Joshua, served in the 7th Special Forces based in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Justin was enlisted as a fire support specialist, trained to help guide munitions to their targets. He had talked about the military, but after the events of September 11th, he was determined to go do his part. He had been in Iraq just over a week. His dad was supposed to be in Baghdad as well with his guard unit, but a a knee injury during training prevented him from going. Justin’s Awards and Decorations include, the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, National Defense Ribbon, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and the Good Citizenship Award by the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. He leaves his parents, Joseph and Jan Johnson, and a brother Joshua, among others. He was killed at age 22 when his patrol vehicle hit an improvised explosive device in Baghdad.
