Spc Joshua Lincoln Knowles

Died: February 5, 2004 in Baghdad, Iraq
Army Spc. Joshua L. Knowles of Sheffield, Iowa played football and track in high school, and also liked golfing, smowboarding, and playing paintball. As a civilian, Josh was studying criminal justice at a community college and working as a woodworker in Mason City before he was called up. He was killed at age 23 when he was hit by a mortar round at a Baghdad International Airport checkpoint. He was in a military cargo truck when the convoy came under mortar attack at a military checkpoint outside the Baghdad International Airport – his vehicle sustained a direct hit by a mortar round. He was posthumously awarded the the Bronze Star, for heroic achievement during war, and the Purple Heart, given to those wounded in war.
