Sgt First Class Gonzalez was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, South Camp Vilseck, Germany as a Bradley Fighting Vehicle driver. He was killed when his armored vehicle was blown up by a homemade bomb as he led a patrol. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal with “V” device (two awards), Army Commendation Medal (two awards), Army Achievement Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Army Good Conduct Medal (two awards), National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (three awards), Combat Infantryman Badge, and the Driver and Mechanic Badge.
