1st Lt Robert Niels Bennedsen
1st Lt. Robert N. Bennedsen of Vashon, Washington is a 2004 graduate of Vashon High School where he was on the Football and Wrestling teams, winning the school’s top scholar athlete award. Robert ran for more than 400 yards in one game, a state record. He also won the state championship for wrestling in his weight class, 160 pounds. He was a versatile athlete, playing soccer and baseball and turned out for track one year. But football was his real passion. During high school, he served as a volunteer firefighter and became qualified to train other firefighters. He attended Seattle University, graduating in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in business. Robert was top of his class as a Distinguished Military Graduate. Robert was also an avid scuba diver who began diving at age 14. He leaves his parents, Scott and Tracy Bennedsen, and a sister, Jamie. He died at age 25 at Qalat, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device. His unit was running supplies to remote outposts. It was during one of those runs that his convoy encountered trouble. The ambulance in front of his truck hit a roadside bomb and was thrown off course, though no one inside the vehicle was hurt. Robert jumped out to help when another IED exploded.
