1st Lt. Christopher S. Goeke of Apple Valley, Minnesota graduated from Apple Valley High School. He also graduated sixth in his class in 2008 at the United States Military Academy at West Point and was commissioned on May 31, 2008. He completed Airborne School, Infantry Officer Basic Course and the Ranger Course at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was assigned to Fort Bragg, where he joined Company C, 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment on May 18, 2009. In September 2009, Chris deployed with the unit to Afghanistan. His Awards and Decorations include, the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Global War on Terror Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Parachute Badge and Ranger Tab. Chris had been married for less than two years. He died at age 23 in Kandahar City, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with rifle, rocket propelled grenade, and small arms fire. He leaves his wife, Kelsey, his parents, Randal Goeke and Pamela Shultz, a brother, Matthew and two sisters, Jennifer and Jessica.
